Stilwell Baker Engineers New Power Supply for Legacy SEM
New, specially engineered power supply for legacy scanning electron microscope.
Vancouver, WA — Custom electronics design firm, Stilwell Baker Inc., has successfully completed a legacy power supply re-design for Superior Technical Services. The company needed a solution for failing discrete power supplies on Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEMs). By using its reverse engineering expertise, Stilwell Baker managed the project to a positive and cost-effective outcome by designing a single, high MTBF multiple output power supply to replace the original equipment, thus extending the useful life of the legacy SEMs.
Superior Technical Services provides service and maintenance for third- and fourth-generation charged particle equipment, including SEMs. The original SEM design called for three discrete power supplies. Each of them had a high failure rate due to design problems. Replacement with new OEM versions was too expensive and repair was fraught with numerous logistical problems.
In order to provide customers a single upgraded replacement power supply, at the same cost as purchasing three discrete supplies from the OEM, Superior Technical contracted with Stilwell Baker.
The new power supply design has significantly more capability: increased reliability to 500,000-hour MTBF, full output and input protection, voltage monitoring indicators on the outputs, and better line and load regulation. It extends the life of these legacy SEMs, keeping the older equipment running longer.
