Semi-Automated Optical Inspection System from Simmons
Optical inspection system.
Exton, PA — RS Simmons has introduced the SimmScope Semi-Automatic Optical Inspection System (SOI) for printed circuit boards. According to the company, the SimmScope greatly enhances the speed and accuracy of manual PCB assembly inspection at a fraction of the cost of an AOI. It also reduces fatigue and eye strain associated with lenses and scopes.
The inspection system is described as an ideal tool for first article and rework inspection and also full assembly inspections of small and medium production runs. Its automatic reporting function makes it especially useful for MIL spec applications that require 100 percent reporting for each board.
The optical inspection system uses a high-resolution camera mounted on an automated X-Y positioning system to quickly move the camera to any region of interest (ROI) on the board. The user interface displays up to a 90X magnified image of each ROI next to a stored image taken from a golden board for that same location. The operator is able to quickly step through each location comparing part numbers, orientation, and solder quality to pass or fail each location.
IPC-610 failure modes are logged in an exportable report for each failed location. The system assures that every required ROI is checked. The SimmScope easily imports Gerber files, X-Y Theta lists, and Bill of Materials to specify each region of interest. It can also be manually taught if no other board data exists. All programming can be done very quickly compared to AOI machines.
