Hamamatsu: Chip-on-Board Sensor
Chip-on-board-type sensor.
Bridgewater, NJ — Hamamatsu Corporation has introduced a new chip-on-board-type illuminance sensor, the S10604. This RoHS-compliant sensor is suitable as an energy-saving sensor for large-screen TV brightness control, as a backlight dimmer in liquid-crystal displays on cell phones, and in other applications where the level of the ambient light is measured.
The sensor's miniature package size of 2.0 x 1.25 x 0.8mm saves space in equipment where component assembly space is critical. The sensor is the same size as typical chip resistors, lending itself to pick-and-place operation during mass production, without the need for special assembly apparatus.
Due to reduced sensitivity to infrared light, this sensor has a spectral response characteristic even closer to that of the human eye. The circuit was designed to reduce effects from infrared LED light at 940nm, light usually used for remote control tasks, which can produce unwanted effects. In addition, the sensor has minimal color temperature error. Output variations are minimized when detecting light of the same brightness such as light from a fluorescent lamp and incandescent lamp.
