Showtime in Las Vegas
Jacob Fattal, Publisher
Show schedules are out of kilter again this year, with APEX having moved from February to April 1 in Las Vegas, and NEPCON East is back in the old Springtime slot of April 30 to May 1. As with most Canon Shows, the Boston show has several co-located events: Assembly New England, OEM New England, Design and Manufacturing New England, and Medical OEM.

What all of this does for the still-new Boston Convention and Exhibition Center is simple: it will be busy. And because it is a two-day show, it's much more realistic for a regional show of this type. Coming as it does barely a month after APEX, there may necessarily be some exhibitors who are stretched very thin, although this is perceived as a strictly regional show vs. APEX's National/International status. No matter what, the APEX Show is not going to go away, and the April 1 time slot seems to be a given for this year and next year at the very least.

As we count down to the first APEX Show in Las Vegas, what can we reasonably expect? After what many people remember about Los Angeles (the less said about that the better), Las Vegas represents the absolute pinnacle of expo-staging and attending. The glitter, glitz, glamour of Las Vegas, plus the absolute non-stop after-hours activities, the superb convention facilities; the hotels are reasonably priced and handy; there is even an elegant monorail that provides limited rapid transit to major Strip hotels. The Mandalay Bay, where APEX will be held, is served by the MGM Grand monorail station, which offers an excellent alternative for people staying at other hotels. Once very automobile-friendly, Las Vegas has become like other major business centers where a car can quickly become a liability during major conventions.

In the meantime, you can check out our APEX Product Preview which starts on page 56, and there will be more APEX products in our March (show) issue, which we will be distributing on the Expo floor.
