Onanon: Lead-Free And Compliant Pin Technology
Milpitas, CA — Onanon Inc. has newly renovated its line of smooth sliding, fast holding press-fit compliant pin connectors. Compliant pin technology has stood the test of time by providing press-fit connections that withstand thermal shock, vibration and humidity. The company has improved this 20-year old technology so that compliant pins slide smoothly into plated thru-holes, dubbed a major breakthrough.
The cost-effectiveness of these rugged pins allows them to be used now with assurance in the harshest environments and in the most delicate devices. They are solderless, and easily meet RoHS standards. These compliant pin connectors can be selected from a quick order catalog or custom made.
The company's innovations in compliant pin technology are made possible by its highly automated close tolerance milling manufacture. According to the company, by precisely engineering the curvature of the hole and pin, it becomes possible to guarantee that the contact force is more than sufficient to maintain contact in the harshest environments, but not so great as to produce excessive insertion force.
Limiting the insertion force allows easy insertion of connectors with a large number of pins. It also eliminates particulate debris from being scraped from the plated thru-hole and increases the number of reinsertion cycles to over a thousand.
Connectors can be manufactured with a PC board platform. These connectors can be part of an interconnection or plug-in modules designed to modify a board's function. Both plug-ins and interconnection platforms have been designed and engineered using only terminating resistors or decoupling capacitors, while other platforms have hosted more complex configurations using microcontroller or analog chips.
The compliant pin products reportedly provide production flexibility to manufacturers. Mass termination of connectors is common in the telecommunications industry. A press can insert a connector with up to a thousand pins. Pin-stitching systems can apply discreet reeled pins one at a time. This latter process has the advantage of a flexible insertion pattern that can change to offer different options in the same PC board.
