1/2 Brick DC-DC Converters from Bel

Westborough, MA — The Bel Power division of Bel Fuse Inc. has introduced the GHBW53V08 Series of isolated DC-DC converters engineered to power IEEE Standard 802.3af-compliant Power over LAN and VoIP applications. The converters join the Company's broad offering of isolated and non-isolated power DC-DC converters for high-speed networking, telecommunications, and computing applications.

The converters can deliver up to 424W of output power at higher voltages, or up to 8A of output current at an output of 53V. The parts are packaged in the industry standard 1/2 brick (2.28 x 2.4-in.) form factor. Devices operate at efficiencies up to 94 percent over an optimized input voltage range of 38 to 55VDC. They have a low thermal impedance baseplate that permits the addition of a heatsink to increase the usable power for any ambient temperature and airflow condition.

The DC-DC converters are designed to power remote devices in such PoE applications as Voice-over-IP (VoIP) and Power-over-LAN. According to the company, their high power density make them a suitable choice for applications where space is limited and a large number of remote devices are to be powered. To comply with the requirements of IEEE 802.3af, the converters have a basic isolation level from input to output of 2250VDC, and have been specifically designed to minimize common-mode noise.

The devices' programmable microcontroller provides the numerous control and protection features that include remote on/off, input under-voltage lockout, input and output OVP, over-temperature protection, current limit and short circuit protection. Parts also offer remote sense and output trim over the range of 42 to 56V. The RoHS 5/6 converters switch at a fixed frequency and have an operating temperature range of -40 to +100°C.
