Hannover Fair 2008 to Spotlight R&D
Hannover, Germany — Hannover Fair once again will hold forth at the giant Hannover Fairgrounds in Hannover, Germany April 21-25, 2008. The show seems to have consolidated its role as a high-tech incubator and permanent fixture of the international technology transfer scene. Show organizer Deutsche Messe AG (DMAG) predicts that networking among members of the research community and industry will again be a key component.

Adaptronics, a recent addition to the show categories, has proven a success, and DMAG will add new displays devoted to the most recent developments in industrial materials. Finally, with Japan serving as Partner Country, the upcoming event will be showcasing industrial innovation from the Pacific Rim.

Principal categories at Hannover Fair will be cutting-edge technologies in general and industrial automation, energy technologies and industrial subcontracting in particular.

According to visitor surveys conducted at Hannover Fair 2007, approximately 63,000 out of 241,000 attendees visited the Research & Technology exhibits in Hall 2, an increase of 29 percent over the previous year's event. Officially subtitled the "R&D Innovations Market", the Research & Technology exhibits have become one of the most popular sectors at the show.

One particular success story in Hall 2 was the Adaptronics sector, which began two years ago as a tiny cluster at the tech-transfer group pavilion and has now grown into its own pavilion featuring 17 exhibiting companies on 1,935 square feet of display space. Representative of the adaptronics industry have already announced their intention to expand their activities in Hall 2 in 2008. New next year will be ExtreMat, a special display that will showcase materials designed for applications in extreme environments. ExtreMat is an integrated, European Union-sponsored project coordinated by the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics and has been in existence for several years. The goal of the program is to develop innovative high-performance materials for use in energy, electronics and aerospace applications.

Hall 2 will also benefit next year from partner country Japan, which is recognized throughout the world as an innovation and technology pacesetter. Japan's presentation will focus primarily on production technologies, energy management, fuel cells, materials management (technical ceramics and castings), automotive, and micro- and nanotechnologies.
