CARLSBAD,CA - Nordson ASYMTEK, a Nordson company, a leader in dispensing, jetting, and coating equipment and technologies, is once again supporting teams in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition in San Diego County. This is the eighth year that Nordson Corporation Foundation has sponsored the competition and individual teams nationally. Employees from Nordson ASYMTEK mentored eight San Diego area teams.

The 8th Annual San Diego Regional FIRST Robotics Competition was held at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California, March 6-8, 2014. Hundreds of students representing schools from all over the world competed in an intense three-day competition. Out of the 60 teams competing, more than half are from the San Diego area.

The FIRST Robotics Competition, called "The Varsity Sport for the Mind," combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, get sponsors, design a team brand, hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It's as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors from a broad spectrum of companies lend their time and talents to guide the teams in all facets of the competition from marketing to engineering.

"It is personally rewarding, challenging, and fun to help these students prepare for this competition," said Stephen des Jardins, senior staff engineer, Nordson ASYMTEK. "Each robot is so different. It's exciting to see how the teams progress and how each robot reflects the personality of the teams and the students. After eight years of working with the students, I still feel extremely fortunate to be involved. "
Nordson ASYMTEK congratulates and is proud to support these teams, several of which won awards and are invited to attend the FIRST Championship finals:
