Tualatin, OR — CUI, Inc. has introduced its 2nd generation non-isolated DC switching regulator series rated at 500mA. The company's new P7805-S series implements several upgrades, including an increased power density, efficiency improvements and a decrease in ripple and noise, all at a lower per unit cost.

The upgraded product delivers efficiencies over 96 percent and is able to maintain a high efficiency rating across the full input range — while still providing up to 95 percent efficiency at a highline input of 32VDC.
The switching regulators have been designed as high performance, drop-in alternatives to LMXX78 and LMXX79 linear regulators, eliminating the need for a heat sink. The devices are intended for portable devices, battery-fed equipment, and embedded designs where board space is at a premium and energy efficiency is a concern. The P7805-S series has a wide input range of 4.75 to 32VDC, varying in line with the output voltage configuration. Output options include 1.5, 1.8, 2.5, 3.3, 5, 6.5, 9, 12, and 15VDC.
To address LMXX79 applications, the company has designed all units in the series with the added capability of supporting a positive-to-negative voltage conversion, increasing the regulators' flexibility. The units are housed in a compact 3-pin TO-220 compatible SIP package measuring 11.60 x 7.50 x 10.20mm and operate across an industrial temperature range of -40 to +85°C. Features include short-circuit protection, over-temperature protection, and an MTBF of 2 million hours.
In addition, CUI has improved the ripple and noise performance across the input range to 20-30mVp-p, thus eliminating the need for LC filters on the output in many instances, further reducing board space and BOM cost.
