LEDs, embedded into the membrane switch or stainless steel keypad construction, are excellent as indicator lights in keypads and keyboards because they provide a visual indication of electronic status. A single LED assembly replaces light pipes or bulky, costly wire harnesses. This simplifies the overall membrane switch design and provides a low profile.
Best for uniform light over a large area, EL panels provide an excellent solution. APEM uses thin film electroluminescence (TFEL) in the design and production of membrane switches. EL backlighting can be customized to any size or shape, and has a wafer thin and flexible profile, less than or equal to 0.1 millimeter. It requires extremely low energy and provides a uniform, luminous output, with multiple available colors. The connection can be located anywhere on the EL lamp.
An EL lamp half-life varies between 3000-5000 hours, depending on the quality of phosphor used. The company's membrane switches with EL lamp illumination are used widely on medical equipment, robotic controls, agricultural equipment, and military training equipment.
